How about that new Yamaha Steve Gadd snare drum. Has anyone tried/heard the steel shelled version?

I've very recently managed to get myself the snare drum of my dreams.
For me it's the ultimate sounding, aand playing snare.

Wow, this is an old thread! I did get a brass Sensitone, but I sold it with my old drumkit. It sounded great, but not quite low-pitched enough for me. I now use a Pearl 6 1/2 Masters Custom African Mahogany. It's disgusting. I'm forever searching, though, for that big, fat-ass meaty Steve-Smith-circa-Journey snare.
I think one of the main things to do in order to get that sound is just tune it low and avoid rimshots. Anyway, I love my snare, overall.
that and Smith used anywhere from a 6 1/2 to an 8 deep snare.
I LOVE the Smith snare sound circa Journey Infinity. I know the recording had a lot to do with it, but that fat, boxy pop is what I did. Moonie had a killer sounding snare IMO. I also love the remastered bang on Phil Ehart's snare from Carry On My Wayward Son.

You can tell by my handle in here, that I'm a big fan of Steve Smith. Unfortunately, he did not play on Journey's Infinity album. That was Ansley Dunbar. Very fat sounding snare. I actually prefer the crack from a thinner snare.
Too bad SOTA is no longer in business. They were around for a short time in the 80's in the Chicago area. Talk about fat with KRACK!! I have a 5.5x14 in an African padauk wood. The shell was pieced together with 1"Lx1/8"Wx1/4"thick sections. The 1/4" shell has reinforcing dowels spaced 1" apart all the way around. The bearing edge is flawless! I added a Rhythm Tech snare carriage that made this drum extremely sensitive and very versatile. It has the widest dynamic range of any drum I've ever played. Watch the auction sites: you might find one floating around. There were only a couple hundred of these made and they are all of similar construction and made of several types of exotic woods. I understand the rosewood ones were just killers.
